Dr Sue-Ching Yeoh Biography
BDS(Syd), MDSC(Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology), FRACDS, FRACDS(Oral Med), FICD, FOMAA, MPhil
Dr Yeoh is an AHPRA registered Oral Medicine Specialist, and maintains a specialist private practice in Sydney as well as a clinical appointment at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Dr Yeoh holds an academic post with the University of Western Australia, being involved with the Oral Medicine training program.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General and Special Fields Stream); the International College of Dentists; the Pierre Fauchard Academy; and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow.
She is currently the President-Elect of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (OMAA) and the Chair of the Australian Dental Association Therapeutics Committee and is a contributing author to the Therapeutic Guidelines: Oral and Dental V3 (2019).
Dr Yeoh is committed to continuing professional development both for herself and her peers, having been a frequently invited speaker for the Australian Dental Association CPD programs. She has presented at national and international conferences; and has generated publications in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to several Oral Medicine textbooks.
She has significant experience in the management of oral conditions in medically compromised patients, particularly in the fields of Haemato-Oncology, Head and Neck Oncology, Immunology and Rheumatology, and Dermatology.
Dr Yeoh's clinical interests include oral mucosal disease, odontogenic and salivary gland pathology, orofacial pain and temporomandibular dysfunction.
Dr Michelle Kang Biography
Michelle is a board registered Oral Medicine Specialist. She is also a Staff Specialist at Sydney Dental Hospital, Visiting Dental Specialist for Hunter New England LHD, Senior Lecturer inOral Medicine/Oral Pathology at Charles Sturt University and is a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Specialist Dental Practice discipline of Oral Medicine).
Growing up in New Zealand, she completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Otago in 2011. She received multiple research scholarships and travel grants to represent the university at research competitions, including IADR ANZ (2010) and ADA Dental Congress (2011). Following graduation, she worked as a general dentist in public and private clinics throughout regional and metropolitan NSW.
Michelle completed her specialist training through the University of Sydney and graduated with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Oral Medicine). During her specialist training, she completed research on health professionals' perceptions and clinical manifestations of chemotherapy and radiation therapy-related oral and oropharyngeal mucositis. Michelle has multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer for the European Journal of Dental Education.
Her interests include managing oral manifestations of systemic diseases, conditions affecting the salivary glands, oral mucosal diseases and orofacial pain.
Dr. Elizabeth Arena Biography
Arena is an Oral Medicine Specialist registered with AHPRA distinguished by her comprehensive academic background and clinical ability.
Beginning her academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws with Honours, Dr. Arena went on to attain a Bachelor of Dentistry with Honours, after which she practised general dentistry within metropolitan Sydney. She has completed a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry, specialising in Oral Medicine, through the University of Sydney. During her specialist training, Dr. Arena has gained extensive experience in the field of Oral Medicine, having serviced both the Western Sydney and Sydney Local Health Districts, and providing both inpatient and outpatient care. During this time, she lectured in Oral Pathology for the University of Sydney Bachelor of Oral Health program.
Dr. Arena's standing as a recognized authority in her field is underscored by her membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (MRACDS) in Oral Medicine. She also holds membership with the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (OMAA) and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine (ACLM).
Dr. Arena has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral epithelial dysplasia, and has undertaken research in these areas. Her other clinical interests include management of oral conditions of haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and other salivary gland and oral mucosal disease.
What is Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology?
Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology is the specialty field of dentistry that deals with the assessment, diagnosis, and primarily non-surgical management of conditions affecting the oral mucosa, jaws an adjacent anatomical structures, as well as patients with oro-facial pain.
This includes the identification and management of oral mucosal conditions, including malignant and pre-malignant oral disease.
- White, red and pigmented lesions.
- Ulcers and blisters eg. recurrent aphthous ulceration, pemphigus, pemphigoid.
- Oral manifestions of systemic disease eg. Lichen planus, lupus erythematosus, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease.
- Salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia eg. Drug related, post-radiotherapy.
- Other salivary gland pathology eg. mucoceles, sialoliths, sialadenitis..
- Orofacial pain eg. Trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain, burning mouth syndrome.
- Oral Mucosal Infections eg. candidiasis, human herpes viral infections
- Polyps, papillomas and epulides.
- Assessment and management of the oral complications of haematological malignancy including oral graft versus host disease in haematopoietic stem-cell transplant recipients.
- Assessment, management of the oral complications of head and neck cancer treatment. Including pre-radiotherapy dental assessments.
- Management of oral sequelae of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
- Assessment and monitoring of patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
- Organising and co-ordinating dental treatment for patients with complex medical conditions, including hereditary and acquired coagulopathies and organ transplant recipients.
